The difference being pitching and chipping is the length, and it's normally said that a pitch shot travels more than 50% through the air and a chip is less. It is pitching that is more likely to be making or breaking your golf round.
Let's take the example of a 50-yard pitch and the pin being 10 yards onto the green. This means the ball lands on the green at 40 yards and releases forward to the hole the remaining ten (more than 50% carry).
Commitment is the key
This is mainly because quitting (slowing down the swing at impact) causes the mishits. If you can, practice the two 'L' shape positions shown in the photos below.
The contrast between good and poor can be major: good can result in you holing the shot whereas poor can be you half top it (thinning) and the ball missiles through the green, or hit the grass first (duff) aka Mr Spieth at Augusta.

South 3rd - 446 yards (par-4)
The longest par-four on the South course is a straight hole until the last 100 yards, which then turns sharply to the right and it plays all of its length. Although a slightly uphill drive, the fairway is generously wide with no bunkers at driving distance. But any tee shot down the right side of middle means a blind second shot over a huge mound to the green that might have to carry some 200 yards. A more practical second to the left, just short of the green, is wise but watch for the two bunkers that can catch a mishit. The ideal drive is down the left and, if long enough, the green can be seen. From this position the shot onto the green is one of the best on the course and it can be anything from a fairway wood to a middle iron. The ball flight needs to start right of target (but not too much), but if a ball lands on the left side of the green, the two bunkers left will swallow up the ball. It's a demanding second shot. The green itself is great, sloping uphill from front-to-back with subtle little burrows in different areas that can catch you out. A par is a pretty good score.
