When you require a card we will give £5 extra credit for a £20 purchase (members £10 increase). Please come into the shop and ask for more details.
Putting drill
It's a well-used putting drill called 'North, East, South, West'. You will need to place four balls at the four compass points (using your putter generally gives you the 3-yard length) around the hole, before going on to hole the putts.
So if you hole out it's 100% and if it misses it's 0%
A 5-10 foot putt has about 50% success on the PGA Tour (twice as good from 2-7 foot longer). Do the drill four times (16 putts) and see how many you hole.
How to play South #6 - 329 yards (par-4)
This is a risk and reward hole. Directly uphill from the tee towards three pot bunkers some 224 yards away.
If you're successful at avoiding the bunkers, it leaves a pitching shot into the green which is only 19 yards in depth. The alternative play is right of the bunkers which can bring the high mounding of gorse and rough into play, especially with a driver.
Playing short of the bunkers or just to the right does leave a longer second shot, which you cannot see the bottom of the pin) but this might be a better play.
The green is bunker-free but there is a little 'valley of sin' (St Andrews 18th) back right which can make a two putt difficult. Golf holes do not have to be long to be tough.
Chris Grant is playing in the London PGA Championships over the next three days at the West Essex Golf Club, Chingford. It's a 36-hole tournament and if he makes the top 30 he qualifies for the Pro-Am. We wish him good play and he will let you know how he performed next week.
