Chris Grant on Tour
My next tournament is the 4BBB Pro-Am with my brother James who is a member of Thorpe Hall GC and currently playing off a six handicap. It's an order of merit event played over two days at East Herts Golf Club which apparently has every species of trees in England on the course. I hope I'm not behind them all! I'll let you know next week how I played.
Tip of the week
The role of legs in the golf swing is a vital; but more now in the way of foundation, resistance and being planted. Back in the day when Jack Nicklaus was playing, his left heel came excessively off the ground. This is rarely seen with many of today's top players. Some also "stack" more weight at address on their left side (right-handed players) to create a better top half rotation. If you worked out body movement percentage it would read on a backswing something like:
Shoulders/chest 50% - core/stomach 30% - hips/legs 15% - feet/stance 5%
Try this drill in the back garden:
Have your legs in a split position
Turn the shoulders level with the ball so that you then can start to feel the resistance around the core
Put your feet together and turn the same way without losing your balance
Then try this with your normal stance and see how it feels
Remember, we are always here to offer our advice so come and speak to us in-store about your game.
East #4 - 282 yards (par-4)
This is our shortest par-4 across all three nines and it's a great risk and reward hole. The big hitters can drive the green but the two bunkers at 209 and 235 yards respectively need to be carried. Any further to the right can find the natural water hazard and taking a line to the left means you can reach the greenside bunkers at 250 yards.
To take out the risk, play short of the two right side bunkers (missing the two on the left) which can leave you less than 100 yards into the green.
Putting is more difficult at the front green and gets more inviting to hole a putt in the valley or at the back half.
