Knowing the distance of a putt can have a significant bearing on how close you get the ball to the hole (or even hole it!). It was interesting whilst teaching a group of six golfers on the putting green - I asked them how far a particular putt was with answers ranging from 9 to 25 feet. The actual length was 25 feet (one golfer was correct).
With modern GPS devices (lasers and watches) we can more or less pin-point our long shots from tee to green but we still, to a large extent, guest the distance on the greens. Try this exercise on our putting green:
- Stand next to a hole
- Throw tee peg (it will not harm the green) a fair distance from that hole
- See if you can gage through eyesight that distance
- Then measure it by pacing that length (usually one pace is 3 foot)
Most three-putts are a result of being too far past the hole or too short. So the next time you walk up the line repairing a pitchmark or removing debris, pace the putt as it might be enlightening to what you think it is to what is actually is.
East #5 - 380 yards (par-4)
This a sharp dogleg from left-to-right with out of bounds running down the right side. The first thing to negotiate is the hedge running right across the fairway, starting at 185 yards from the tee. The hedge is some 7 yards in width, so it's almost 200 yards to carry. Playing short of the hedge is a good option, meaning you need three shots to reach the green. Driving over the hedge can leave a medium to short iron for the approach shot.
The green is two tiered with the top area being quite narrow. There is a large bunker on the right side and going long over the green almost certainly results in a "lost" ball with thick hedgerow lurking there. The stroke index is 4 and it sometimes can play harder; being cautious on a golf hole can be the correct play.
