Goodbye to 'The King' 

Arnold Palmer sadly passed away but his legacy as a true icon of the game will certainly live on. Labelled as the first real superstar of the game, it is said that 'The King' transcended the game of golf. 

Palmer became the first major US superstar and went on to win seven Majors, including four Masters titles - and his rivalry with the 'Big Three' dominated golf. 

Tributes have poured in, from players past and present, as well as from the US President. Jack Nicklaus said:

"He was more than a golfer or even great golfer. He was an icon. Arnold was someone who was a pioneer in his sport. He was the king of our sport and always will be."

  

Well done, Chris! 

As mentioned last week, our PGA trainee professional Chris Grant competed in the prestigious East Anglian Open held at the Rayleigh Club. Played over 36 holes he scored 70/70 (-2 under par) for the two rounds, finishing in seventh position. The next day was the pro-am where Chris then scored a 68 (-3 under par) finishing in second position. This was a fantastic finish to his summer tournaments, but there is no let up for Chris, he is about to embark on the winter tournaments run by the Essex PGA. 2017 promises to be even better.


 

Ladies Rules Afternoon 

Fifteen of nine hole lady members attended our practical rules talk. The rules ranged from the teeing ground, fairway, water hazards, lost ball, ball identifying and the putting green. The ladies found it very interesting and good interaction for the two hour duration. We will be doing more through the coming months (breaks up the winter) so keep a look out.


Favourite Course

We have now completed the how to play hole #... Now it's your turn! We have asked Alan Walker, owner and course designer of Garon Park, to pick his favourite '18'. What we would like you to do is select your top 18 too, It must have five par-3s, nine par-4s and four par-5s from any of the three nines (27 holes). If it matches with Alan's choice, an hour golf lesson is the prize! We will give you time to have a think, so the winner will be announced in the second week of October's newsletter.
