The confidence of youth
How nice it was to see the British Mastersreturn to our TV screens over the weekend. Morethan 57,000 spectators attended the event overthe four days, and the crowds were treated tosome top-class golf. If the numbers through thegates were impressive, how about the tournamentwinner? Matt Fitzpatrick, 21, completed awire-to-wire victory in the kind of manner you'dexpect from a player with twice the experience. He showed composure beyond his years, and twoareas of his game stood out, particularly duringthe final round.
Firstly, his accuracy off the tee; he was by nomeans the longest, but he would prove true theold adage 'Driving is for show, putting is fordough'. In finding the fairway more often thannot he let other areas of his game do thetalking. He would have been forgiven forsuccumbing to the nerves down the stretch buttime after time he holed clutch putts, and atpace, the ball hitting the back of the cup withauthority.

A word from Head Greenkeeper - GeorgeGrimes
As we head towards late autumn and winter, weare planning our winter work for the threenines. We have agreed a fairly comprehensiveprogram of work which will commence with there-laying and re-turfing of the teeing groundson East 3, South 8 and 9 and South 2. All ofthese holes are par three holes, except forSouth 9, and they are the ones that have themost wear and tear throughout the season. Whenthe new turf is laid, these will be out of playuntil next year so please play from thealternative teeing grounds/possibly mats. Asfrom next week, work will begin on these holes, therefore we will be put on temporary tees untilthe work is finished.
I'm pleased to announce that for the second yearrunning we will continue to play from grassteeing grounds throughout the winter, except forthe tees being renovated. I know that for manyyears golfers played from mats early on in theseason until the end of March. During some weekstees will be in forward positions but wintergolf is more about exercise than competition.
In closing can I respectfully ask members toaccept that winter conditions and weather canthrow up all manners of issues for golf coursesand for greenkeeping staff. We will do our bestto keep our courses playable and presentable butwhen the weather beats us we have to take andmake the necessary decisions on golf trolleys, buggies, hole closures and the like - thank youfor your understanding in advance.
